San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Originally a hermitage dating back to the 9th or 10th century San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is located on a small island separated from the mainland by a stone bridge. The two large arches on the east side of the island can be seen from the path that goes down and across the bridge to the island. The island is off the north west coast of Spain north east of Bilbao and is a short distance south west of Capo Machichaco, the closest town being Bermeo. The inner arch has a span of about 35 ft and the outer arch a span of about 45 ft.
