Elves’ Church

NABSQNO 28W 412272 – 7275066

Less than a mile off the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn in north central Iceland lies Dimmuborgir. There a pool of lava about 1 ¼ miles in diameter formed during a volcanic eruption. High pillars of lava then formed when steam rose through the molten rock and cooled. This has left a dark satanic landscape which gives the area its name “dark cities” or “gloomy castles”.

Maybe the best known arch is found very near to the junction of the Big Circle and the Church Circle Trails and is called Kirkja or The Church but it is also known as Elves’ Church.

It has a span of 18 ft and a height of 17 ft.
