Unnamed Arch in Dimmuborgir 2
NABSQNO 28W 411860 – 7275407
Less than a mile off the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn in north central Iceland lies Dimmuborgir. There a pool of lava about 1 ¼ miles in diameter formed during a volcanic eruption. High pillars of lava then formed when steam rose through the molten rock and cooled. This has left a dark satanic landscape which gives the area its name “dark cities” or “gloomy castles”.
There three main hiking trails around the area. There is also a primitive ½ mile trail that leaves the Big Circle Trail and traverses across the lava field and exits close to junction of the Small and Big Circle Trails. After a short climb the trail continues through an arch and then after a short distance comes to three arches that are within 200 yards of each other. This one is the first of these arches.
It has a span of about 8 ft and a height of about 5 ft.
